Post Office of the Past-Double Shot!

SOME teachers DUG comic books!

Below-from a 1967 THOR-Is this the first hint of CONAN and the ERB properties coming to comics? Did they plant a seed in editor Roy Thomas' mind that early?

CONAN would be obtained by Roy for Marvel Comics in 1970!

What's Wrong With This Picture?

If you can tear your eyes away from the lovely creature in the Batgirl outfit, ask yourself why this pic just don't work the way the creators intended..

Yep. The idea is that she's lying among tons of comic books. They don't "read" as comics, however. Thanks to today's use of cluttered cover logos and over-rendered and colored art, the books all appear as small, colorful blurs, as opposed to, say, a BATMAN comic, or an ARCHIE comic cover..Can you make out more than 3 logos or characters in that visual mess?

Before the 80s, clear storytelling and graphics were the rule, so a cover could snag an eye fro across a store, tipping the scales toward a sale or two, and creating potential future readers..

Not any more..

Fabulous 1969 UK Marvel Annual Cover painting!

Off-Model Madness!

I so love toys and products from before the days of style guides. Those are pre-prepared books full of company-approved images for use on toys, curtains, shirts, beach towels, etc....All committee-directed to be JUST the way all parties want the images to look.

Not so in the 60s and 70s. The firms licensing the characters got to often create the artwork for the products, resulting in some rather--odd--resuslts...Check some of these products sporting "not quite right" artwork of these well-established properties...

1976 Spider-Man Whitman Painting!

A great painting of ol' Webhead, from the 1976 Whitman storybook.

Yes, Spidey is putting the wrap on Doc Ock beside the World Trade Center tower...

Anyone know the artist for this piece?
